When is a 4K projector worthwhile?
The 4K resolution - also known as Ultra High Definition (UHD) - takes your viewing experience to a new level. With four times more image detail than Full HD, you can enjoy unrivalled sharpness, which is particularly effective on large screens of over 100 inches. Another advantage: compared to Full HD projectors, a 4K projector shows the finest details more clearly , even at close distances.
However, not every 4K projector works in the same way: while native 4K projectors output the full resolution directly, devices with 4K upscaling use clever technology to upscale content and bring it up to 4K level. Regardless of which model you choose, the growing number of 4K films and series makes the projector a future-proof choice.
Advantages of 4K projectors at a glance
4K projectors offer some significant advantages over conventional Full HD projectors:
Home cinema, gaming and more: find the right 4K projector for your needs
4K projectors not only offer an outstanding visual experience for home cinema, but can also be used in a variety of ways - from gaming to business presentations. But why is it worth using a 4K projector in these different areas?
For a successful projection, it is important that the 4K projector is tailored to the intended use. Special colour modes are crucial for home cinema, while gaming projectors often offer responsive modes. For presentations in brighter rooms, high brightness is recommended to achieve the best results.
These technologies are used in 4K projectors
The technologies used in a 4K projector are decisive for the picture quality and the overall experience. The most common technologies are:
LED projectors use light-emitting diodes to generate light. LED projectors offer a long service life and are low-maintenance, but do not achieve the same brightness as laser projectors.
Laser projectors use laser diodes as a light source. They are characterised by an exceptionally long service life and constant brightness and provide an improved colour palette.
UHP lamps score points with their ease of replacement and low purchase costs, but losebrightness and colour intensity after theirservice lifeof around 3,000 to 10,000 hours.
DLP projectors (Digital Light Processing) offer high contrast ratios and smooth movements, resulting in impressive images with deep blacks and clear details.
LCD projectors (Liquid Crystal Display) are characterised by rich and vivid colours and good brightness values. Thanks to their high light output in ANSI lumens, LCD projectors are ideal for presentations and projections in brighter rooms.
LCoS and SXRD projectors utilise modern light generation using LEDs and lasers. These technologies offer sharper and more precise images and are more energy-efficient thanks to energy-saving and long-lasting projector lamps.
HDR technologies in projectors improve image quality in a variety of ways: HDR10 is the most common HDR standard with 10-bit colour depth and static tone mapping, while HDR10+ uses dynamic tone mapping to adjust brightness and contrast in real time. Dolby Vision offers even higher picture quality with 12-bit colour depth, while HLG was specially developed for live broadcasts and supports HDR and SDR.
Important purchasing criteria for 4K projectors: what matters
Brightness (lumen): Pay attention to the brightness of the projector, which is specified in lumens. The brighter the room, the more lumens are required to ensure a clear picture.
Screen and room size: (Ultra) short-throw projectors are suitable for small rooms as they can project a large image from a short distance. The larger the room, the more the projector needs to deliver in terms of projection power. Use our projection area calculator to determine the ideal distance for your screen.
Operating noise: Choose a projector with low operating noise so that the film experience is not impaired by annoying fan noise.
Connections and compatibility: Check that the projector has the right connections for your devices and is compatible with your current setup so that you can play your content without any problems.
